Formation of MiRaCle

Our very first adventure was formation of MiRaCle at the Aqua Deli in Leyden Street, London E1 with election of members. In attendance was Roger, Brian, Len and Jim. (1)

Kings Cross, St Pancras International and Farringdon

Our first train outing to Kings Cross, St Pancras International and Farringdon to look at the new Thameslink arrangements with Roger, Brian, Len and Jim. (2)

First High Speed 1 experience

28 Jun 2012

Our trip commenced at St Pancras International on High Speed One on a Javelin to Stratford International, then Docklands Light Railway to Stratford, Jubilee to West Ham, return via DLR back to Stratford, then back on the Great Eastern to Liverpool Street. (3)

Goblin Trip

5 Nov 2012

Our 4th trip was on the Goblin line from Gospel Oak to Barking, journey commenced from Moorgate via Highbury & Islington to Gospel Oak, From Barking returned via C2C to West Ham and District line to Aldgate East. (4)

London Overground Extension South London

14 Mar 2013

Our first 2013 trip was on the London Overground extension - South London line from Surrey Quays to Clapham Junction with a stop at Denmark Hill for lunch at the Phoenix. (6)

Stevenage & Hitchin

2 May 2013

First Capital Connect service was taken from  Kings Cross to Stevenage for High Speed train viewing, then onto Hitchin and Radcliffe Arms for lunch. Saw the IC225 unit in special James Bond 007 Skyfall livery whilst waiting for our return service back to London. (7)

Trip to Epping Ongar Railway

29 Jul 2013

Our first Heritage Preserved Railway trip on the Central line to Epping, heritage bus to North Weald & steam train haulage onwards to Ongar, lunch at the Cock Tavern. A nice preserved railway. (8)

Docklands Light Railway Tour

Trip on the Docklands Light Railway - DLR to Greenwich, lunch at the Cutty Sark, Greenwich, travelling on the Emirates Cable Car and back to London Bridge via Greenwich station, crossed the Thames 4 times. (9)

Brunel Museum and Christmas lunch at the Mayflower, Rotherhithe

This was our 2nd visit to Brunel's Museum at Rotherhithe with added bonus of seeing Brunel's caisson with Christmas lunch afterwards at the Mayflower, Rotherhithe. (10)

Watford Junction

First 2014 visit to Watford Junction via First Capital Connect Moorgate to Highbury & Islington, then Overground to Willesden Junction then Bakerloo / Overground to Watford Junction seeing Pendolino running & lunch at the Flag, Watford Junction, and return trip via London Midland to Euston. (11)

The Bluebell Railway

2nd 2014 trip to the preserved railway the Bluebell line travelling from Victoria to East Grinstead on Southern, then onto Sheffield Park on the Bluebell line, with lunch at the Bessemer Arms at Sheffield Park station. (12)

Our trip by Javelin from St Pancras International on High Speed 1 to Gravesend. Lunch at the Three Daws by the Thames and then return back to London Bridge on conventional South Eastern train service from Gravesend. (13)

Our next 2014 trip was to Salisbury, travelling on South West Trains class 159 units from Waterloo to Salisbury with lunch at the Red Lion & look around city including Cathedral. (14)

Clapham Junction

Our first trip of the year continued the 'Junction Station' theme with a visit to Clapham Junction and the Junction Pub for lunch, via Central Line to Shepherds Bush, then Overground to Clapham Junction, inspecting 5 platforms (decided by drawing numbers from a hat), returning home to various destinations. A very enjoyable trip to Eynsford from Blackfriars by Thameslink service, with lunch at the Plough in the picturesque village of Eynsford, a walk in the Darent Valley under the Eynsford viaduct & then back to the station for home destinations. (18)

York

6 Jul 2015

Our first long distance trip took us to York from Kings Cross with the famous Class 91 locomotive Battle of Britain Memorial Flight 91110 (UK Speed record holder excluding the Eurostar services). Met up with Dudley at York station, National Railway Museum, walk along part of the wall around York, lunch at Brigantes, explore little passageways, churches, The Shambles & outside the Minster. Greenford and West Ruislip

2 Sep 2015

Some local North West London travel starting out from Paddington to Greenford by Great Western Railways class 165 turbo unit. Then Central line onto West Ruislip, lunch at the Beefeater Orchard, Ruislip, then return by TfL Metropolitan Line from Ruislip back into London. (20)

Watercress Line

An enjoyable trip to Hampshire from Waterloo to Alton by South West Trains, heading across the footbridge at Alton to join the steam hauled service with a stop off at Ropley to see the steam loco engineering works along with visiting loco Bittern, then onto Alresford for lunch. Journeyed behind steam locos Lord Nelson and Wadebridge. (21)

Beckenham Junction

Our first 2016 trip was to Beckenham Junction and the George Inn, via Aldgate East, Overground from Whitechapel collecting members at Honor Oak Park, changing to Southern at Norwood Junction, then changing to Croydon TramLink at East Croydon. Tram to Beckenham Junction and lunch, then returned via Southern service via Birkbeck & Crystal Palace and returning home to various destinations. (23)

The Aylesbury Circular. Marylebone to Aylesbury via High Wycombe & Princes Risborough on Chiltern Railways travelling in a Chiltern Turbo class 165. Didcot Railway Centre

27 Jul 2016

A visit to the Didcot Railway Centre with lunch at the Prince of Wales pub in Didcot prior to entering into the centre. Departing from Paddington to Didcot Parkway in an Adelante class 180 Dudley joining us at Reading. Live steam running including GWR King class King Edward II very smart in blue livery. We returned back to London in HST 125, attendees, Brian, Roger, Patrick and Dudley & Mr President. The Hon Sec was absent again due to trapped nerve in his right leg. (26)

Shoreham, Kent

5 Oct 2016

A visit to Shoreham, Kent with a lunch at The Kings Arms then a stroll to the Shoreham Aircraft museum which was of great interest. Thameslink service from Blackfriars meeting further members who joined the train at Crofton Park station and then progressed to Shoreham, a very pretty village in the Darent valley, then making our way home. Christmas Lunch The Angel Rotherhithe

Our 2016 Christmas lunch was at the Angel Rotherhithe, with special guest John Robinson providing an insight into Railway Chaplain duties. 12 sat down for lunch. Also included the inauguration of Roger as the new Honourable Secretary effective 2017 by the outgoing Hon Sec Mr vdP. (28)

Mitcham Junction

21 Feb 2017

Our 2017 junction trip was to Mitcham Junction. Our journey commenced from London Blackfriars where we all met up and caught a class 700 new Thameslink unit (a first) to Mitcham Junction. After spending a little time there, a Croydon TramLink service was caught to Wimbledon. An enjoyable lunch ensued in the Alexandra and members then made their way home from Wimbledon. (29)

Rugby

3 May 2017

Our journey commenced from London Euston catching a London Midland service via Northampton to Rugby, where we met Dudley from our northern branch. We then made our way into the town and sampled the Wheeltappers before moving onto the Everards Seven Stars where lunch was taken. Our return journey was also on a London Midland service but this travelled back via Watford Gap beside the M1 on the fast tracks with speeds of 110mph being achieved. Attendees were Brian, Roger and The President, an enjoyable day out at a bargain fare £7.90 return with senior railcard. (30)

North Norfolk Railway

14 Jun 2017

A very interesting visit to the North Norfolk Railway starting out from London Liverpool St to Norwich on Greater Anglia service changing onto a connecting service to Sheringham. A walk across the road and you arrive at the North Norfolk Railway Sheringham station, the preserved railway and network are linked by rail. Lunch was taken at the station café. We then proceeded to Weybourne where we were able to look around the signal box and had explained how the levers, bells & tokens work. Then a tour around the work sheds showing various locomotives & stock being overhauled. Our journey then continued onto Holt. We returned back to Sheringham, a brief drink in the Robin Hood pub, before taking our journey back to London via Norwich. Attendees were Brian, Roger, Jim L & the President with guest Malcolm who is a volunteer on the NNR. (31)

Selhurst Traincare Depot

A very special trip by invite to the Southern Selhurst Traincare Depot. Following on from the MiRaCle Christmas 2016 lunch, interest was expressed by several members to visit a working train depot. With the aid of Dudley and John Robinson who came along as a guest to the lunch, we were able to make contact with Stu Berry the Admin Manager and the visit was duly agreed and organised. With 11 members and friends attending. We departed London Bridge on the 10.10 service to West Croydon and alighted at Selhurst. With a simple walk from the station we arrived at the depot. We were greeted and shown around the cleaning shed, the repair shed; the maintenance shed and then finally had a shunting experience whereby we had a short journey on a class 377 into the maintenance shed. All in all, a most memorable and enjoyable experience, all the staff who looked after us, gave us a grand day out. We then returned back home via various routes. (32)

Isle of Wight Steam Railway

An enjoyable day visit to the Isle of Wight and the Steam Railway at Smallbrook - Haven Street - Wootton. 7 members & friends attended. Journey started from Waterloo to Portsmouth Harbour, then Wightlink Catamaran to Ryde Pier Head. Island Line train (ex-Underground tube stock) down to Smallbrook Junction. Alighted there and travelled on the Isle of Wight Steam railway to Haven Street. Lunch was taken at station café and then ventured onto Wootton. We returned to Haven Street and from there back via Smallbrook Junction, Ryde and Portsmouth Harbour to London Waterloo and to home via various routes. (33)

Nene Valley Railway

25 Oct 2017

Nene Valley Railway visit. 9 members and friends journeyed up from Kings Cross (Len [SAAL], Jackie, Claire, Patrick, John, Roger [Hon Sec], Brian & Jim L + President) to Peterborough on Virgin East Coast and met up with Dudley (Northern branch) and Malcolm from the North Norfolk Railway. We walked to the Nene Valley Railway from city centre, train taken from Peterborough Nene Valley Station up to Yarwell. Very enjoyable day and weather was a bonus. Saw a sorry looking Flying Scotsman at Wansford by the sheds. Took lunch in the café and explored around the station. Made our way back to Peterborough and after saying our goodbyes headed back home – north, south and east! (34)

We returned to the Angel Rotherhithe for our 2017 Christmas lunch (4th occasion) with special guest Alistair Little from Southern Selhurst Traincare depot and his wife Lesley. 17 of us sat down for lunch. Hampton Court (Junction)

26 Feb 2018

Our 2018 Junction trip was to Hampton Court running through Hampton Court Junction. Lunch was taken at the Prince of Wales. We took a South Western Railway service from Waterloo. A cold & crisp day albeit sunny, we walked across Hampton Court bridge over the Thames and saw Hampton Court Palace. Attendees were Roger, Brian, Len, Malcolm, Patrick & Jim. SAAL provided apple brandy and very good it was as well! Our MiRaCle trips for 2018 with dates were discussed. (36)

Rye

14 May 2018

Our trip to Rye departing from London Charing Cross taking a Southeastern service via Tunbridge Wells and St Leonards Warrior Square where we changed to a Southern Marshlink service onwards to the Cinque Port town of Rye in East Sussex. An enjoyable lunch was taken at the Ship Inn and then a gentle amble around the town. We then continued our journey onwards to Ashford International. From there a Javelin service was taken back to St Pancras International on High Speed 1 taking 40 minutes! Attendees were Roger, Brian, Len, Jackie, Malcolm, Patrick & Jim. Weather was a bonus. (37)

Ely

18 Jun 2018

Ely trip, a journey from Kings Cross via Cambridge to Ely. We had an enjoyable lunch at the Prince Albert pub and a look inside at the amazing Ely cathedral. We experienced Great Northern operational hiccups en route, our train left Kings X at 10.12 with extra stops inserted, arriving at Cambridge where our driver could not take the service onwards to Ely as he was not passed to drive the route. Some 30 mins later the following service to Kings Lynn arrived and we caught this to Ely. Attendees Roger (Hon Sec); Len (SAAL), Patrick, Brian & Jim (the President), we met up with Dudley (Northern member & Malcolm (East Anglia member) at Ely. Return journey from Ely, our 4 car unit should have couple to 8 cars at Cambridge, but these units were not available. Although we had seats, the train was packed. Nevertheless this did not spoil our day. We were back at Kings X around 10 past 5. The weather again was a bonus. (38)

Bluebell Railway - a revisit

Bluebell Railway – a revisit, starting from London Victoria and taking a Southern service via East Croydon down to East Grinstead. Bluebell station at East Grinstead is adjacent to the Network. Steam haulage to Horsted Keynes and then down to Sheffield Park. Although very hot, nevertheless a most enjoyable day. Attendees Roger (Hon Sec), Len (SAAL), Jackie, Malcolm, Patrick, with Ian & Janet and Dennis & Pam, Bob joining us down to East Grinstead, plus Jim (President). Returned via East Croydon and proceeded via various routes back to our homes. (39)

Woodbridge Tide Mill

A very interesting visit to Woodbridge Tide Mill – From Liverpool Street departing at 10.00 and heading to Ipswich where Malcolm NNR rep joined us from Norwich. A short journey was taken from Ipswich on the East Suffolk line to Woodbridge. Lunch was at The Anchor and then a walk to the Tide Mill. Other members / friends were Roger (Hon Sec); Len (SAAL); Brian, Patrick, Colin, Dennis and Jim (President). Saw the demo where tidal water stored in the mill pond was released and worked the water wheel and mill components, very interesting and informative. We returned via Ipswich back to our respective homes. (40)

The Oxford Circular

24 Oct 2018

The Oxford Circular – Out from London Paddington on a new Class 800 IET to Oxford with impressive acceleration under electric power, our unit changed over to diesel power as we slowed and switched across from down fast to relief before Didcot. An enjoyable lunch taken at The Punter beside the Thames in Oxford and we then proceeded to walk into the city centre to explore. Return journey from Oxford was on the new Chiltern Railways route via Bicester & High Wycombe back to Marylebone with some spirited running. Attendees were Roger (Hon Sec); Len (SAAL); Brian, Patrick, Colin, Tim, Malcolm, Bob and Jim (President). A very good turnout and excellent value day with railcard discounted 2 single tickets at £3.55 each. (41)

Our 5th Christmas lunch at the Angel Rotherhithe with the return of special guest John Robinson, Railway Chaplain. 16 of us sat down for lunch. Dalston Junction

13 Feb 2019

Our 2019 junction trip was to Dalston Junction. Lunch was taken at the Halal restaurant in Alie Street where we received a presentation from Paul New about High Speed 2 which was very interesting. Attendees there were Malcolm (NNR); *Brian, *Colin, *Roger (Hon Sec), *Bob, Len (SAAL), Patrick & *Jim (President) and guest Paul New. Then a *smaller group proceeded by underground & Overground services to Dalston Junction where we were shown around the local area by the Hon Sec. An informative afternoon. (43)

Severn Valley Railway

14 May 2019

An amazing opportunity and experience, a special trip to the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) due to SAAL’s church connections. Our trip took 7 of us from London Euston to Birmingham New Street (Virgin Trains), short walk across to Birmingham Moor Street and onto Kidderminster (West Midland Trains) and to the SVR. We were joined by 3 other members and enjoyed our day courtesy of Phil Swallow owner of inspection saloon ‘Caroline’ and hauled by Bullied West Country steam locomotive Taw Valley on 2 round trips to Bridgnorth and back. A light breakfast, buffet lunch & afternoon tea were duly provided along with excellent commentary from Phil Swallow. An excellent day and well looked after by the staff of the SVR including Beth. Attendees from Euston were Len; SAAL, Jackie, Patrick, Colin, Tim, Roger; Hon Sec and Jim; EP with an early start 06:43 service. We were joined at Kidderminster by Brian, Helen & Dudley. Our return from Kidderminster to Birmingham Snow Hill (West Midlands Train) and changed there to a Chiltern Railway service back to London Marylebone arriving at 20:37, a long day but most memorable. Lewes

19 Jun 2019

Our excellent value day out to Lewes via Brighton on Southern Railway. 10.25 departure from London Victoria to Brighton and then taking a Southern Coastway service to Lewes. Lunch was taken at The Rights of Man a Harvey’s public house with excellent food. A walk around part of the town by the castle then followed. Attendees were Roger; Hon Sec, Brian, Len; SAAL, Patrick, Malcolm, Colin, Tim & Bob who joined us at East Croydon. We returned on the 15.45 direct service from Lewes back to London. (45)

GWR Didcot Railway Centre - a revisit

14 Aug 2019

GWR Didcot Railway Centre (a return visit – last visited over 3 years ago) – all things Great Western Railway with steam demonstration services in action. Attendees were Roger, Malcolm, Colin and Jim starting out from London Paddington on a GWR Class 800 IET with a very fast run picking up at Reading where Tim joined us. We headed to Didcot Parkway with a brief stop for lunch at the Prince of Wales pub just outside the station. Then into the Railway Centre and enjoyed a day around the exhibits with live running from GWR Saint Class Lady of Legend 2999 and Collett GWR tank loco 1450 with auto trailer. Very enjoyable despite the grey slightly damp day which did not spoil the fun. Returned by GWP IET train again with spirited high-speed performance (125mph recorded) back to Reading & Paddington. Christmas Lunch at the Captain Kidd, Wapping

After last year's Christmas lunch at the Angel, we decided to switch venues. The lunch was taken at the Captain Kidd in Wapping. An excellent turnout with 20 members and friends attending. With views overlooking the Thames, the Captain Kidd looked after us very well. (47)

Shenfield (and Hutton Junction)

25 Feb 2020

Our 7th junction trip headed to Shenfield on the TfL Rail service from London Liverpool Street. Shenfield at one time being known as Shenfield & Hutton Junction until 1969. TfL Rail services will become Crossrail – the Elizabeth Line once the central core under London is open sometime in mid-2021. Our outward journey was on the new class 345 Crossrail unit to Shenfield which serves all stations. An enjoyable lunch at The Hutton Junction with MiRaCle members Roger, Malcolm, Jim L, Tim, Brian, Patrick, Dudley, Colin & Jim. Our return for 7 members back to Liverpool St was by the quicker Greater Anglia service. (48)

Lincoln

21 Sep 2021

Our 1st MiRaCle trip since February 2020 (due to Covid 19 restrictions) on Tues 21 September 2021 to Lincoln. 5 of us (Roger, Hon Sec; Len, SAAL; Tim; Patrick and Jim, The President) started out from Kings Cross on the 08.06 LNER Azuma service to Lincoln. Malcolm joined us at Peterborough and Dudley met us at Newark North Gate where our service diverted off the East Coast main line to Lincoln. Explored the city especially going up to the castle and near to the Cathedral. Lunch was taken at the Wig & Mitre. James (Len's old school chum friend) was our guide for the day. After descending Steep Hill we returned on the 15.27 LNER Azuma service back to Kings Cross, Dudley returned back to York on a separate LNER service. We then met with Colin who joined us for dinner at Carluccio's St Pancras International next door to Kings X. A very enjoyable day out and weather was kind to us. (49)

The Goblin, A Reversal of Fortunes

Our 2nd MiRaCle trip since February 2020 - a revisit to the Goblin line (Gospel Oak to Barking), this time we traversed from east to west. A convoluted set of train journeys starting from London Fenchurch Street.

3. Gospel Oak Overground NLL dep 11.52, Highbury & Islington arr 12.02

Effingham Junction

22 Feb 2022

Our first trip for 2022 and our 10th anniversary of MiRaCle (formed 20 Feb 2012). Patrick, Len (SAAL), Malcolm, Roger (Hon Sec), Colin and Jim (President) met at London Waterloo and made our way down to Effingham Junction with Tim joining us at Surbiton. Got off the train to look around Effingham Junction with photos taken. Then continued onto Guildford where we explored the town heading toward Millmead where lunch was taken at the Britannia, very enjoyable. Then looked at the old castle with views overlooking the town. We returned back to the station and made our respective ways back to our homes. (52)

Brown Windsor Circular

26 Apr 2022

Brown Windsor Circular starting out from London Waterloo heading to Windsor & Eton Riverside on South Western Rail. 40 mins round boat trip on French Brother’s boat, followed by lunch at Brown’s Windsor. Returned from Windsor & Eton Central taking the 6 mins GWR shuttle service to Slough and then headed back to London Paddington on a GWR IET class 800 non-stop in 15 mins to Paddington. Attendees were Roger (Hon Sec), Len (SAAL), Brian, Dudley, Colin, Tim, Malcolm, Patrick and Jim (President). We made our respective ways back to our homes. (53)

Elizabeth Line Exploration (Part 1)

3 Aug 2022

Elizabeth Line Exploration part 1, members met at Paddington Main Line station in order to explore the new Elizabeth Line. Our first stop after departing Paddington Low Level was Tottenham Court Road. We then proceeded to Liverpool Street where the unusual 45-degree incline lift was sampled. We met Claire on the main line station concourse. 11 of us then proceeded to Canary Wharf where we investigated the Crossrail Place roof top garden. From there we re-joined the Elizabeth Line and headed east to Abbey Wood (terminus of the south east branch of the Elizabeth Line). We then returned westbound and at Whitechapel changed to underground line services to Aldgate East and proceeded to the Halal in Alie Street for our lunch. From there we headed back to our respective homes. Attendees were Roger (Hon Sec), Len (SAAL), Jackie, Claire, Bob, Dudley, Colin, Tim, Malcolm, Patrick and Jim (President). (54)

N1CE (Northern Line Extension / Lift 109 / Thames Clipper)

1 Mar 2023

Our first trip for 2023 with a difference! N1CE (Northern Line Extension / Lift 109 / Thames Clipper) – with Patrick, Len (DT), Malcolm (Windmills and Tide Mills), Roger (Hon Sec), Colin, Tim (SAAL) SER Bob and Jim (President) met at London Waterloo (Malcolm we met at Battersea Power Station). We made our way to Battersea Power Station on the new Northern Line Extension. At the Power Station, 7 of us experienced Lift 109 (109 meters above sea level) in a lift which is inside one of the power station chimneys. From the power station, we caught an Uber Thames Clipper boat from Battersea Power Station pier down to Tower Pier. Then lunch at the Halal Alie Street, afterwards making our way back to respective homes. (56)

Severn Valley Railway (a revisit)

4 May 2023

A revisit to the wonderful Severn Valley Railway with the kindness of Phil Swallow using the OBBO 80972 Caroline for 2 return trips from Kidderminster SVR to Bridgnorth. Early departure from London Euston to Birmingham New Street on an Avanti West Coast Pendolino with a pick up at Watford Junction. Then a short walk from New Street to Birmingham Moor St to Kidderminster on West Midlands Railway. 1st departure from Kidderminster SVR was at 10.30. Excellent food & drink provided through the services of Paisley Flour. All in all, a great day out, weather good and all train connections fulfilled – Patrick, Brian, Len (DT), Malcolm (Windmills and Tide Mills), Roger (Hon Sec), Colin, Tim (SAAL), Dudley (Northern Branch), SER Bob and Jim (President). Southend on Sea Circular

11 Jul 2023

Our Southend on Sea clockwise Circular trip. 10 of us (Patrick, Brian, Len (DT), Malcolm (Windmills and Tide Mills & NNR Rep), Roger (Hon Sec), Colin, Tim (SAAL), Dudley (Northern Branch), SER Bob and Jim (President) assembled at London Liverpool St catching the Greater Anglia 10.55 service to Southend Victoria. An enjoyable lunch at The Olde Trout Inn followed by a stroll through the town towards Southend Pier. Some of the group took the Pier Railway to the end and back and a handful walked the length of the pier 1.34 miles to the end, taking the train back to the shore 1.25 miles. We then returned using the c2c service from Southend Central back to London Fenchurch Street around 3.45pm time. A most enjoyable day out to the Thames estuary and Southend Pier. (58)

North Norfolk Railway (a revisit)

6 Sep 2023

A revisit to the North Norfolk Railway for some of the MiRaCle members, several of which started out from London Liverpool Street changing at Norwich for a connecting Greater Anglia service to Sheringham. Lunch first of all at The Two Lifeboys and then onwards to the NNR from Sheringham to Holt exploring around Holt station. Attendees were Roger (Hon Sec), Tim (SAAL), Len (DT&RR), Malcolm (Windmills and Tide Mills & NNR Rep), Colin, Patrick and SER Bob and Jim (El P). A very enjoyable day despite the sea mists around Sheringham! Majority of members then returned from Sheringham back via Norwich to Liverpool Street. (59)

Steam GWR Museum at Swindon

17 Oct 2023

MiRaCle members assembled at London Paddington for a GWR high speed run to Swindon, although delays experienced en-route due to signalling issues and SOS button pressed by someone on the IEP before Didcot! Lunch taken at The Queens Tap just outside Swindon railway station. Then a walk to Steam, the GWR museum situated in the former GWR locomotive works. Impressive display of railway items, ranging from interactive exhibits to a King and Castle class steam locomotives. A very enjoyable day with Roger (Hon Sec), Tim (SAAL), Malcolm (Windmills and Tide Mills & NNR Rep), Colin, Patrick, Dudley (Northern branch), SER Bob, Brian and Jim (El P). A fast run with speeds up to 125mph experienced for our return back to London Paddington. (60)

A return to the Mayflower, Rotherhithe for our MiRaCle Christmas lunch 2023. The Pompey Circular

27 Feb 2024

Our first trip for 2024 the Pompey Circular. Set out from London Victoria on a Southern service to Portsmouth & South Sea, but with a change at Havant. Approx 25 mins delay with the following service which was due to run direct to Portsmouth Harbour but was terminated short at Fratton where we had to change for a following service to Portsmouth Harbour. Nice lunch at the Ship Anson and exploration afterwards around the dock area. Returned on a South Western Railway service back to London Waterloo with Patrick, Len (DT), Brian, Malcolm (Windmills and Tide Mills), Roger (Hon Sec), Colin, Tim (SAAL) SER Bob and Jim (President). Crossing of the Thames in London, On, Over and Under!

16 Apr 2024

Members met at Embankment where we bordered an (1) Uber Thames Clipper Boat to head downstream to North Greenwich pier where the o2 Dome is located. From there we headed to (2) IFS Cloud Cable Car crossing the Thames to Royal Docks, then (3) DLR via Poplar to Cutty Sark. Alighted for lunch at the Gypsy Moth. After lunch, some of us then walked through (5) Greenwich foot tunnel, taking the DLR from (6) Island Gardens back to Cutty Sark. Then walked to Greenwich where we caught a Thameslink service to Woolwich Arsenal, then a further walk to Woolwich and headed back into central London on (7) Elizabeth Line to make our way back to our homes. In attendance were Roger (Hon Sec); Patrick, Brian, SER Bob, Colin, Len (DT/RR), Jackie and Jim (EL P). (63)

Woodbridge Tide Mill (a revisit)

Members and friends gathered at Ipswich Railway station after journeying from London Liverpool Street and Diss on Greater Anglia services. From Ipswich we made our way to Woodbridge and an enjoyable lunch was taken at the Anchor. We then all proceeded to the Tide Mill and saw the mill in operation when the stored water was released from the pond to work the equipment. Then back to Woodbridge for a train to Ipswich where members and friends parted making our way back to London and Diss. Those in attendance were Roger (Hon Sec), Patrick, Brian, Colin, Malcolm, Len, Jackie, Clare and Jim (El P). (64)

Epping Ongar Railway (a revisit)

7 Aug 2024

Epping Ongar Railway (a revisit). Members and friends gathered at London Liverpool Street to head down to the Central line with Malcolm joining us at Woodford and John at Buckhurst Hill proceeding to Epping. From there a heritage bus (roue no. 339) was caught taking us to the EOR Ongar station (a former outpost of the Central line). From there a steam hauled service on the EOR was caught to North Weald and lunch was taken at the very nice pub the Kings Head. After returning to North Weald and exploring around the station. We returned on the heritage bus back to Epping and made our way back to our respective homes. Those in attendance were Roger (Hon Sec), Tim (SAAL), Patrick, Brian, Colin, Malcolm, SER Bob, Len, Dudley, John and Jim (El P). (65)

Kent Circular

7 Oct 2024

Kent Circular. Members gathered at London Victoria and headed on a Southeastern service to Broadstairs via Bromley South and Rochester. After a short walk down to the sea, lunch was taken at the very nice The Charles Dickens pub on the sea front. Headed back to Broadstairs station and caught a Javelin onwards to Ramsgate where we changed to a further Javelin service and headed back to central London via, Dover and Ashford International where we joined HS1 for a high-speed journey back to St Pancras International via Ebbsfleet International and Stratford International with speeds of up to 138mph, then making our way back to our respective homes. Bletchley Park

Our first 2025 trip to visit Bletchley Park. We joined a London Northwestern Railway service from London Euston catching 09.56 fast service to Bletchley. An interesting day with a lot of history to see from the 2nd World War period and how they cracked the Enigma machine. Lunch was also taken at Bletchley Park. Members and friends in attendance were Roger (Hon Sec), Tim (SAAL), Malcolm (Windmills, Tide mills and NNR rep), Colin, Patrick, John, Philip and Jim (El P). Delays encountered on return journey back to London Euston from Bletchley. (68)

Heckington Windmill

29 Apr 2025

Our long-planned trip to Heckington Windmill (organised by Mistroonable). With Tim (SAAL), Roger (Hon Sec); Len (C-H); Patrick; Colin and Brian and Jim departing from London Kings Cross on a Hull Trains service to Grantham where we met Malcolm (NNR and Windmills secretary) catching an East Midlands Service to Heckington. At Heckington we met up with John. A conducted tour was provided by the windmill trust which was very informative. Followed by lunch at the Royal Oak. Bidding our farewells to John, we returned via Grantham back to London Kings Cross and made our separate ways home. A most enjoyable days outing with new railway mileage experienced. (69)

Spa Valley Railway

24 Jul 2025

Our 2025 preserved railway trip to the Spa Valley Railway starting out from London Bridge and heading to Eridge on a Southern DMU service. From Eridge, we headed to Tunbridge Wells West where lunch was taken at the Smith & Western. Returning back to Eridge on the Spa Valley we enjoyed a quick drink in the Huntsman pub in Eridge before heading back to London on a Southern service and then home. With Tim (SAAL); Roger (Hon Sec); Len (C-H); Patrick; Colin; Brian; John; SER Bob and Jim. A very enjoyable day with further new railway mileage experienced. (70)

The Cambridge Circular

Our Cambridge Circular trip departing from London Kings Cross on a Great Northern non-stop service to Cambridge with Roger (Hon Sec), Colin, John, Patrick, Brian and Len. Visited the Earl of Derby for lunch which was good. Our return was on a Greater Anglia service back to London Liverpool Street, hence the circular aspect. An enjoyable day with more new railway mileage experienced. (71)

Bletchley Park (a revisit)

17 Feb 2026

Our first 2026 trip, a revisit to Bletchley Park (taking advantage of the annual entry ticket purchased in 2025). Meeting up at London Euston, we joined a London Northwestern Railway service from London Euston catching 09.56 fast service to Bletchley. A further interesting day visiting huts 11, 11a, 3 and 8 along with the Intelligence Factory and the Age of AI. Lunch was also taken at Bletchley Park. Members in attendance were Roger (Hon Sec), Malcolm, Patrick and Jim (El P). No delays encountered on return journey back to London Euston this time from Bletchley! (73)
